I learned about solder seal connectors 15 or so years ago and yet I still meet people all the time who have never heard of them. These are some pretty cool little pieces of technology that can really make a difference in your wiring projects. I don’t use them all the time, in fact far from it, but that’s usually because I don’t have them on hand. I really need to change that. You’ll see why when you watch this video from Adam Savage.
The other cool thing he’s showing off is wire labeling and I dig it!
Check it all out below.
Video Description:
Adam introduces two simple tools to help simplify your electronics wiring projects: solder seal connectors that eliminate the need for soldering wires together, and an essential wire labeler that can spare you headaches in troubleshooting down the line. Adam used both of these tools extensively in putting together his xEMU spacesuit electronics–simple and effective is sometimes the best way to go!
I would like to know the real brand name of those connectors he used. I was dumb enough to buy the set-off of a FB ad. I tried to use them. I used the advertised heat gun trick. It never worked. It melted the solder. Yet I was able to easily pull the wires apart. Even tried a small propane cigarette lighter type torch, much hotter. Same issue. $40, and I threw them away. Maybe those that I had were a very cheap knock off. . Yet Adam handled it like an eggshell himself.I would like to have these If I could find some that really worked.
I wouldn’t trust those all in one deals.
If it sounds too good to be true it’s usually crap.
Heat shrink crimp on connectors for splices.
Weather Pack or Deutsch for terminations.
Gotta ask yourself how many OEM’s solder anything?
