Rust Avengers 4: Bringing The Pontiac GTO To Life (finally…)

For most of the 2019 Power Tour, Deboss Garage’s Pontiac GTO was engineless. That was not the plan when they dropped down from Canada to jump in on a killer roadtrip session, but hey, you do what you have to do when you have to do it. So the Goat got shoved in a trailer, the trailer was hooked to a truck and wherever the Tour went, the noiseless GTO went with them. We’ve shown you the prior episodes of the Power Tour/Rust Avengers series, so you can go back and see how the engine was being built in Canada while the guys were getting started on Power Tour and how the engine was delivered to them in a parking lot when it was ready. We’ve also shown you the infamous hotel room engine build that took place in Indiana and now, it’s time for the ultimate test: Will the GTO leave America with a running heartbeat?

The answer: yes and no. We don’t want to give away the whole story, so look at it like this: regardless of how good things are going, in the end there is always a chance that there is something you forgot, something you didn’t plan on or sometimes, plain old dumb luck that will intervene and blow your high. You will see the Goat run and drive and lay a patch of rubber and all of that good stuff. But if you think that this all sounds a little too made-for-television perfect, it ain’t.     Explanation is sort of true but leaves out one important detail. The cam and lifters are lubricated from oil “splash” thrown off the rotating crankshaft. Oil flowing through and past the rod bearings flies off the crankshaft throws and splash onto the rotating camshaft above. It takes a crankshaft speed of 1500 to 2500 rpm to provide an adequate amount of oil to splash onto the cam and lifters for a safe break in of the mating surfaces.
