If someone ever asked us if we could run a large vessel aground at full speed while navigating it between two other disabled ships, we’d just shrug it off and say, “Yeah, why?” We’d do that because unless we were at a ship wrecking yard in Turkey, no one would actually have said large vessel and the need for us to run it headlong into the beach. Obviously the captain/pilot/guy who drew the lucky rock from the hat driving this boat has been around the block or ocean a time or two. While the video is a little slow to develop, the action at the end when the ship actually comes up on shore is pretty awesome. It sure looks fairly gentle but we’re guessing it is anything but on the bridge of the boat that is grinding to a halt on shore.
We were tipped off to this video yesterday after running the story about the actual Love Boat being put out to pasture and sold for scrap. This video was taken at the very same yard that the Love Boat is in. As they call it in Europe, the “ship breaking” business is located in Turkey and it is not a business for the weak or back or will. The work is dangerous and hard. Deaths from people falling, industrial accidents, and other gross reasons is pretty common in businesses like this so we have been told. It is torches, sledgehammers, and other blunt force instruments. All of that scrap steel isn’t going to melt itself down to that is why ships need to be “broken” on shore. Getting them there looks to be the fun part.
The moral of the story is that the job to have in a Turkish ship breaking yard is not the guy with the torch, it is the guy with the job of getting the ships “parked” at the joint. Watch the video and you’ll see why.
